Holidays June 24

Indian Day celebrated in Peru

In the east of Peru, settlements of indigenous Indian tribes have survived, which to this day live in isolation, speak local dialects, and earn their livelihood by farming, hunting or fishing. The holiday begins when the Indians, dressed in national clothes - multi-colored ponchos and knitted hulo hats, leave their settlements - the coastal areas of Titicaca, the Puno Plateau, small mountain and forest towns. They walk to Cuzco - the main city for them, which they consider the center of the universe. Here they honor their spirits, ask the gods for mercy, purify their souls and perform the main ritual - worship of the Sun, which they consider their highest deity. They thank him for his generosity and pray for the gift of a rich harvest.

Quebec National Day

This day is considered an official holiday in Quebec. The people call it the day of Jean-Baptiste (John the Baptist) or simply the day of Quebec. It has ancient roots. In Catholic and Protestant countries, a religious holiday was widely celebrated - the Nativity of John the Baptist, which came immediately after the summer solstice. He was very popular in monarchical France. Quebec is a province where the vast majority of residents have French roots. It was their ancestors, being French colonists, who brought their traditions to Canada. These days, the streets of the cities of this Canadian province are noisy and crowded: dances are held, folk festivals, fun processions are held. The celebration ends with an evening colorful fireworks.

Barnabas-Strawberry. Barnabas Day.

According to legend, at noon all evil spirits gathered at Barnabas - demons, witches, devils, ghouls in order to divide land and destinies among themselves. They decided which of them would scare people, who would send them illnesses, who would tangle pets with tails, manes and wool. Having agreed among themselves and sharing responsibilities, evil spirits began to ride on the ground and grass. Therefore, the grass was not mowed or torn that day, the peasants believed that it was possible to grab evil spirits, and with them all misfortunes. Herbs were not collected either, as they were considered poisonous that day. From June 24, the day began to shorten, the "mermaid" week began. We went to Barnabas-Strawberries to see if the strawberries were ripe: if it was ripe and red, then this summer we could expect a good harvest of berries.

Historical events of June 24

June 24, 1934 from Kharkov, the capital of Ukraine was moved to Kiev

After the October Revolution, the Red Army troops for a long time could not gain a foothold in Kiev. The city was either in the hands of the Reds, or it was fought back by the Petliurists or the Polish Army. Therefore, the Bolsheviks decided that the main city of Ukraine, its capital, would be Kharkov, because Kiev was under the control of the Ukrainian People's Republic. A little later, in the thirties, in the highest echelons of the leadership of the USSR, they started talking about returning Kiev to the status of capital. And at the next plenary session of the Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party, held in January 1934, it was officially announced that the city of Kiev was considered the capital of Ukraine. And on June 24, a ceremonial move of the city authorities took place.

June 24, 1945 Victory Parade took place on Red Square

The parade marked the victory of the Soviet people over the Nazi invaders. Young Suvorov drummers were the first to go on the cobblestones of Red Square, then the combined regiments of the fronts followed, for each of which the military band performed a special march. The parade was directed by Sergey Gerasimov, who was the head of the Documentary Films Studio, and filmed the legendary Victory Parade for newsreels. One of his successful directorial ideas is the plot when Soviet soldiers overthrow fascist banners. To emphasize the disgust for the defeated enemy, the hands of the soldiers were dressed in gloves, which were exponentially burned after the end of the parade. Command of the Victory Parade was assigned to Marshal Rokossovsky. Marshal Zhukov took the parade. While the Victory Day parade was on, rain poured continuously, as if mourning all those who died in this merciless war. Due to rain, the solemn processions of civilians and the airborne part of the parade were canceled.

June 24, 1959 Nikita Khrushchev promised to show Richard Nixon, the American president, “Kuzkin’s mother”

Getting acquainted with the achievements of the American economy that the USA demonstrated at the exhibition in Sokolniki, Nikita Khrushchev told Richard Nixon, who was nearby, that the USSR had secret weapons, so we will show you “Kuzkin’s mother”. He meant that the Soviet Union also has something to surprise America. Apparently Nikita Sergeevich, being impressed by what he saw, wanted to give his "answer to Chamberlain." At the exhibition, one could see firsthand how ordinary Americans live, a mock-up of an American house, household appliances and other benefits of the then civilization were demonstrated in the context. Naturally, the interest of visitors to the show was increased, because much of what was seen for the Soviet people was a curiosity. Khrushchev was hurt by this and said that our people do not need bourgeois luxury goods. Then he turned the conversation on another topic and threatened the Americans with the famous "Kuz'ka mother."
